The first club race of 2007 went well. It was at VIR and we ran the full course, 3.27 miles. I made it through the Sprint race and the Enduro without incident. There were 60 cars all running at the same time. We shared the track with the Vintage Drivers Club, so all the BMW’s ran at the same time. Weather was threatening for Sunday so we ran the Sprint race and Enduro on Saturday. I qualified 34th for the Sprint race and finished 29th. I ran a 2:17.8 as the fasted lap. I was using Hoosiers for the first time as well as XP12 Carbotech brakes front and rear, wink mirror and Hans device. I was pleased with the results. There was only one other IS car running. Charles Benoit was driving a stroked E-30 M3. I could pull him in the straights so was able to finish ahead of him. He didn’t finish the Enduro, had some mechanical problems. I didn’t think I would like driving with the Hans Device. But after a while I didn’t even know it was there. The extra vision the wink mirror gave me helped a lot. I had the luxury of a pit crew for the Enduro. A student/client, David Small, came down to see the race with his son Justin and they agreed to help me out. I really appreciated their help. I took them out for steak dinner afterwards. It was great kicking back with good steak, good beer and good people after a great day of racing.
Sunday was a different story. There were flash flood warnings for the whole east coast. We didn’t know if we would be able to run later so I decided to end the weekend at VIR on a positive note and head home. I left VIR at 8:15 A.M. and got home at 3:15 P.M.. 7 hours to go 260 miles. 95 traffic was horrible, but I got home in one piece and I slept very well that night. I signed up for the Beaverun race in July. I’m looking forward to that. I haven’t been to that track in a couple years, it should be fun. Until next time.
